Iceland Foods: Energised
Seed Renewables has successfully designed and delivered a 1.5 MWp rooftop solar PV installation at Iceland Foods’ distribution centre in Livingston, Scotland. Funded by Zestec Renewable Energy and powered by Octopus Energy Generation, the project is helping Iceland reduce energy costs, lower carbon emissions and advance its sustainability goals.
Project Overview
As one of the UK’s fastest-growing retailers, Iceland Foods operates nearly 1,000 stores nationwide. Its Livingston distribution centre is a critical part of the company’s supply chain, supporting stores across the UK.
Seed Renewables designed and installed a rooftop solar system comprising 3,300 solar panels, transforming unused roof space into a high-performing renewable energy asset capable of generating approximately 1.6 GWh of clean electricity annually.
Key Project Statistics
- 1.5 MWp rooftop solar PV installation
- 3,300 solar panels installed
- 1.6 GWh of renewable electricity generated annually
- 202 tonnes CO₂e estimated annual carbon savings
- 95% of generated electricity consumed on site
- 14 weeks programme delivery
The Challenge
Delivering renewable energy infrastructure at a live distribution centre required meticulous planning and coordination. The Livingston site plays a vital role within Iceland’s logistics network, making uninterrupted operations essential throughout the project.
Working closely with Iceland Foods, GXO and site stakeholders, Seed Renewables coordinated all aspects of design, installation, crane operations, material logistics and electrical integration. Detailed shutdown strategies ensured critical operations remained protected while integrating the new solar infrastructure.
The Outcome
The completed solar PV system now provides a significant source of renewable electricity for the facility, delivering measurable environmental and commercial benefits. The project demonstrates how large industrial and logistics facilities can adopt renewable energy without compromising operational performance.
Graham Ireland, Director of Energy and Maintenance Services, Iceland Foods, commented:
“Sustainability remains a key focus for Iceland, and this project represents another significant milestone in our journey to reduce carbon emissions across our operations. The Livingston distribution centre is a critical part of our UK supply chain network, so maintaining business continuity throughout the project was essential. We were impressed by the professionalism, expertise and collaborative approach demonstrated throughout the delivery programme, which was completed safely and successfully while maintaining day-to-day operations.”
Russ Kelsall, Senior Project Manager, Zestec Renewable Energy, said:
“Our partners, Seed Renewables, installed a well-designed, safely constructed robust asset, that will silently generate clean renewable energy for years to come with minimal impact. The frozen food sector’s energy demand is a prime example of a high static electrical load that can be easily supplemented by solar electricity. At this site, the rooftop solar system will contribute, long term, to carbon reduction and energy cost saving for the well-known high street brand.”
Brenton Spear, Chief Operating Officer at Seed Renewables, added:
“We are proud to have delivered this large-scale solar PV installation and it has been a real pleasure working with Iceland, GXO and Zestec throughout the project. The strong partnership between all stakeholders enabled us to successfully deliver a complex scheme while creating a high-performing renewable energy asset that will provide long-term value.”
